So you want to start a blog? Since having a successful blog myself, I have had a lot of online fans, friends and family ask how they can get started. It is my goal with this website and ebooks that I will teach you how to be successful in the world of blogging. This is from my own personal experience and what has worked for me. I hope that I can help you and you can grow into a successful blogger.

I initially started my first blog as a fun outlet for my son to create a funny character to make a few videos. Of course in the back of my mind I thought it would be great if the blog succeeded, but I would never have dreamed it would be where it is today with thousands of social media followers and monthly viewers. If you are starting a blog because you think you are going to get rich quick, think again. Over time you can definitely make it a full time income with a lot of hard work and dedication. Yes, there are bloggers that work hard and make over a six figure monthly income. Others make nothing and some make a few hundred a month.

There are millions of bloggers out there on the web so get creative and find your own niche.

I started my blog in late July of 2011 and was already getting contacted by companies to do reviews within a few short weeks. We started by doing fun reviews of products we already had and gave away some small prizes. Within days we were starting to see our traffic and fan base rapidly increase. Now companies contact us to market their products by doing reviews and giveaways. We even connect them with other bloggers by setting up campaigns to promote their products and services. We have worked with so many amazing companies like WalMart, GM, Cascade and Best Buy. We have had the opportunity to go on amazing trips to Orlando, New York City and an amazing Disney trip to Los Angeles.

I quickly decided that I needed to learn how to monetize my blog and within a few months was starting to receive an extra income. It takes a lot of hard work, determination, and self-discipline to run a successful blog. Blogging is not a way to get rich quick! If you follow this website and our series of ebooks, I guarantee you will have a successful blog you want to monetize, within a few months and starting to earn an extra income.

First, you need to start your blog and we are here to help you!

What do you want to blog about?

Think about this long and hard before you start your blog. It is much harder to change your blog after you’ve been blogging for months. Take a few days to jot down some ideas of things you love to give advice on, share, or tips you may have to give others instead of diving into the blogosphere too quickly.

Will your blog be for profit or just for fun?

When I started Giveaway Bandit I really didn’t think about it generating any income. We actually just started it for fun until we had an overwhelming amount of companies start contacting us to promote their products. If you really want to make money blogging you need to think carefully about the name and domain of your blog. You can make money through advertising, sponsored posts, promotions, and more. I’ll explain that better later. Make sure whether you want it to generate an income or not that you stay true to who you are in your writing. Companies want to see why and how you are unique.

What will you name your blog?

Naming your blog is going to be one of the most important decisions you make. I see a lot of bloggers include their name or even how many kids they have in the name. Here’s an example: Melanie’s One Bundle of Joy. By naming my blog this it indicates I have one child. What if you have more than one child a few years later? Come up with a unique name to your blog but also one that will be significant over the years.

Here’s my own personal example:

I started Giveaway Bandit thinking we would only review and giveaway products. Within a few weeks of starting, it quickly changed into a lifestyle blog. I found my fans enjoyed the recipes, diy and other articles we posted. I wish now we would have thought about this before putting giveaway in the title because some companies think we only offer giveaways.

And why did I name this blog my name? It’s based on my own experience and I want to brand myself as someone who helps other bloggers get started.

Will you host your own blog or use a free blogging service?

I know of many bloggers that have used blogger.com since it is free and regretted it over time. The biggest reason for not using it is that Google has control over blogger.com and if they want to remove your blog for any reason they will. Plus, you won’t actually have your own domain. A few months after you sign up for a free service you will be back here asking how to transfer it to wordpress or similar. I suggest not using a free blogging service.

I suggest using WordPress free blog software at WordPress.org. You will need to purchase your own domain and hosting which is super cheap. You should be able to purchase your own domain and hosting for less than $50 per year. So it’s pretty cheap to do it yourself. Plus, we’ll lead you through the steps on our blog in setting up your own WordPress site. If you are hosting your blog yourself then continue reading our tips below.

Where do you get a domain and hosting?

There are millions of websites that sell domains and hosting. I suggest GoDaddy for their simple ‘one click install’ economy WordPress hosting plan they offer. It is especially easy if this is your first time setting up a blog. You only need to purchase the domain and hosting. They will offer you a load of other add-ons but you do not need them. Each blogger I know uses a different service for their hosting. Shop around if you’d like. You’ll find many differences in prices and other options but go with what works best for you.

Now you should have your domain and hosting. WordPress offers some great tutorials on installing your wordpress files. After that, you are ready to start blogging!
